Skin turgor is another underused marker. Gently pinch the skin on the back of your hand and release it. In a well-hydrated person, the skin snaps back almost instantly.

Slow recoil — even taking two to three seconds — can be an early indicator of subcutaneous dehydration, particularly in higher-stress periods.

Electrolytes matter as much as volume. The morning after even moderate alcohol consumption, your body may produce pale, high-volume urine — which looks hydrated on the color scale — while your cells and tissues are actually running dry. This is one reason post-drinking headaches, fatigue, and brain fog are so persistent even after a single night out.

If you drink alcohol regularly or socially, treat the following morning as a deliberate rehydration window. Prioritize water with electrolytes before coffee, and do not use urine color as your guide after a night of drinking — it will almost certainly mislead you.
