What Actually Helps

The most practical first step is reducing your dependence on refined seed oils in everyday cooking. This means swapping canola, sunflower, soybean, and corn oil for options with a more favourable fat profile.

Extra virgin olive oil is the most evidence-backed alternative. It is rich in oleic acid and polyphenols, both of which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in multiple large-scale studies, including the landmark PREDIMED trial.

Coconut oil and grass-fed butter are also popular alternatives, though the research on these is more mixed. They are likely better choices than refined seed oils for high-heat cooking, simply because they are more stable and less prone to oxidation.

Rebalancing your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is equally important. Eating oily fish two to three times per week — salmon, mackerel, sardines — significantly increases your omega-3 intake and helps counteract the inflammatory load from excess linoleic acid.

Reading food labels matters here. Seed oils appear in salad dressings, crisps, crackers, protein bars, restaurant meals, and even foods marketed as healthy. Becoming a label reader is one of the most practical habits you can build.
